Why Leadership?

Many people today are seeking to understand — and many people are writing about — the concept of leadership today. The topic has become almost evangelical and prophetic in tone.

It can be quite confusing to try to understand a great deal about leadership because different people tend to talk about leadership from many different perspectives, contexts, traits, styles, types and many people don’t realize these differences.

For example, some people talk about the roles of leadership:  senior-level executives, middle managers, etc.

Other people tend to talk about the traits of leadership:   being influential, inspirational, etc. In conversations or readings about leadership, it is important to distinguish whether one is talking about roles or traits. Also it can be confusing because different people talk about different contexts of leadership:  leading oneself, leading other individuals, leading groups, leading organisations, etc. Thus, it can be very simplistic to simply generalize about leadership as if it applies the same way in every situation.

What is Leadership?

Understanding the concept of leadership requires more than reading a few articles or exhorting what leaders should be.   It also requires a consideration of the context in which the leadership activities are performed.  By context I mean cultural, organisation, situational and establishing what the values of leadership are in a given environment.

Some people use the term “leadership” (the capability to lead) to refer to executive management (a role in an organisation).

Within the context of the range of courses we deliver, we will view Leadership simply as the ability to lead:  to create a vision, to empower self and others to perfom, to provide direction and to take action and responsibility for one’s own actions and the ability to make decisions for which each individual is accountable.
